Apple Maps Problems Leads to Brief Statement

More problems with Apple Maps have arisen and finally a comment from Apple. And all this before the iPhone 5 came out – I bet they aren’t as excited as they once were.

Yesterday, we highlighted some of the finds of the new Apple maps, which replaced the long running Google Maps on Apple’s new operating system, iOS 6. This led to the iOS6pocalypse as it was poorly dubbed – not sure I have a better name though. Applacalypse maybe? Maptastrophy? Anyway, there has been a Tumblr set up showcasing some of the better pics.

I just took the London Overground today, and the station I got off at wasn’t on Apple Maps. The station before and after were, but not my station. At least the folks on the London Underground are having some fun with Apple Maps – check out the sign at Hackney Wick station (image via Ben Mathis). This is all kinds of awesome.

Some map listings are outright crazy. How much testing did they do – none? I know more people got iOS 6 than they had testers, but in less than 5 hours, people were finding problems. Towns have new spellings or locations. And why do so many places look like a Salvador Dali painting, with melting landscapes?

Apple has provided a quick response, barely acknowledging the problems, while trying to paint a pretty picture (via AllThingsD).

“Customers around the world are upgrading to iOS 6 with over 200 new features including Apple Maps, our first map service. We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover, turn by turn navigation, and Siri integration. We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it. Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better.”

Surely another statement will follow, right? COME BACK, GOOGLE MAPS!
