Watch a Video on the Crazy iPhone Smuggling Into China
The iPhones are pretty popular. You have Captain Obvious to thank for that last statement. The price difference between iPhones in Hong Kong and China is $125, meaning a lot of people try to smuggle them back into China and flip them for a profit. A news report by NTD Television – who has a terribly bored anchor woman who is horrible at reading a teleprompter – shows people getting caught trying to bring in iPhones. 3000 phones have been seized in 221 cases, meaning people are sneaking in an average of almost 14 iPhones per person.
The iPhones have been smuggled in some pretty creative ways. One guy had 30 (!!!) iPhones tied to his waist and ankles, but then couldn’t bend over to pick up his luggage, tipping off authorities. One person had 6 pockets inside his shirt, each pocket holding 3 phones each (that’s 18 total phones for those poor at math). Another guy, who might do well in the drug smuggling business (except for the fact he got busted) put iPhones in a secret department in the soles of his shoes. He was thinking on his feet. (*groan)
