Amy Winehouse Play Cancelled After Father Objects
I don’t know how or why this was cancelled so late in the day, but the Danish production of a play about the life of the late Amy Winehouse has been cancelled after Amy’s father Mitch denied the use of her music and likeness (via Rolling Stone). Did the production people not speak to Mitch or the estate earlier, or did they pull a 180, as the play was set to open in January. The play was written by 100 monkeys locked in a room 11 Danish playwrights, and focused on the singer’s troubles with drugs and alcohol and the public pressure.
Andrew W.K. is No Longer the Cultural Ambassador to the Middle East
It was only yesterday when I expressed my shock at the selection of Andrew W.K. as the U.S. Department of State’s Cultural Ambassador. It turns out the invite has been rescinded, to the surprise of Andrew W.K. (and no one else) (via Billboard).
Now, I know this is a government agency that likely runs poorly, but don’t you do ANY research at all before selecting someone somewhat inappropriate for the role? Or was it merely the reaction yesterday when the news was announced that the U.S. Department of State finally looked into who this guy was? Not that there’s anything wrong with Andrew per se – he’s just a party, brick smashing in the face, kind of guy. Andrew W.K. took to Twitter to say “I’m just blown away. After a year of planning, the US State Dept. just canceled my Middle East trip because I’m too party.” Years of planning? Very uncool, government.
Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said yesterday that senior officials (damn seniors again!) thought Andrew W.K. was an inappropriate choice for outreach in conservative Muslim places like Bahrain. And they weren’t consulted earlier because? It looks like the top 2 stories today are both communication problems left until the last minute. I need a side job teaching communication to playwrights and government officials.
Wayne Coyne to Sell Grenade He Brought to Airport
The Flaming Lips’ singer, Wayne Coyne, foolishly brought a grenade to an airport earlier this month. And now, like all good things in America, the grenade is for sale (via Consequence of Sound). You can pick up the confetti stuffed golden grenade at an Oklahoma novelty store, Dwelling Spaces. While it makes a great gift, it’s not advisable to hand out said gift in the vicinity of any airports.
