Morning Music Notes – Forget Google, Be Your Own Streetview!
Bob Welch from Fleetwood Mac Is Dead, Possibly Suicide
Former Fleetwood Mac guitarist, Bob Welch, has died at the age of 66 due to a gunshot wound to the chest (via Hollywood Reporter). Yup, that’ll do it. I’ve debated whether or not to make a “you can go your own way – to heaven” comment, but I wasn’t sure if the Simpsons-esque dark humour would come off as crude, so you get this explanatory sentence instead of what might’ve been.
Police spokesman Don Aaron said Welch left a suicide note, also noting that Welch had a history of health issues. Welch played on 5 Fleetwood Mac albums from 1971 to 1975, not including the mega-selling Rumours album, and was not with the band when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. However, he did have a platinum-selling solo album after his departure from the band.
Lauryn Hill Finds Out Why You Should Pay Your Taxes
Ex-Fugees member and multiple Grammy winning solo artist Pras Lauryn Hill has been charged with failing to file income taxes on three years of earnings worth about $1.8 million (via Yahoo). She didn’t file from 2005 to 2007, and her royalties from music and film made her a substantial amount. She could go to jail for a year and be fined $100,000. The miseducation of Lauryn Hill is now seeming like an aptly named album title.
Who Needs Google Street View When You Can Make Your Own!
Google has recently ramped up their maps and Street View, and being the geeky person that I am, I want to know what I can do to help, or how I can play a role in these maps. The possibly copyright-infringingly named company, Streetview Technology, lets you make your own Street View-esque maps and upload them to your website (via Crave). Be prepared to see a lot of a) pubs b) vomit c) ditches d) hospitals and e) hookers on my Street View uploads.
The Germany company, Streetview Technology, has made DIY streetview, which comes with a camera, Image Processing Server, Google custom streetview player, plus optional car mount and a backpack. The camera shoots “dome-like” photos every 3 seconds, geotags them, and automatically stitches them together. This could be sort of awesome for hiking or stalking. According to Streetview Technology General Manager Jan Martin Mantkowski’s email to Crave, the pricing is “for the professional with a budget.” By the time I can afford whatever that vague sentence means, we will all have Google camera as part of our eyeballs anyway, so I will wait for that.
