iPhone + Guitar = gTar = Cheating or Brilliant Teacher?
Some simple math for you in the post headline. A new Kickstarter project was launch for gTar, which is a proper guitar but has a spot for you to stick your iPhone into the guitar, similar to how you stick a Nintendo Wii controller (or “Wiimote” as they say) into the guitar for Rock Band / Guitar Hero. $100,000 was the target and it soared past that and is now over $200,000 in funds raised. So what the heck is the gTar exactly?
From their Kickstarter page: “The gTar is a fully digital guitar that makes it easy for anybody to play music, regardless of experience. All you have to do is dock your iPhone in the body, load up the gTar app, and an array of interactive LEDs along the fretboard will show you how to play.”
Very cool. Each note you (attempt) to play is relayed to the iPhone, which then produces the sound. And if you suck, who cares – there’s a SmartPlay feature which mutes out the wrong notes. Can I request that all Nickelback notes are also blocked? There’s also an approved iPhone app that goes along with gTar. gTar currently only works for iPhone 4 and 4S, but they are hoping to add more phones in the future, which seems pointless, since the iPhone market share will soon be 100%.
To get yours, a minimum pledge of $399 USD is required to actually get something in return for your donation, such as a gTar, t-shirts, and even custom gTars. Check out the prototype in action in the video below.
