Morning Music Notes – Super Bowl News Hangover
One Expensive Finger
Anyone else sick of the M.I.A. Super Bowl middle finger news? I’ll pretend you said no, and then talk about it for the next 5 paragraphs. By now, you likely know that M.I.A. flipped the finger during Madonna’s halftime show. NBC and the NFL apologized, yet blamed one another. The almighty television governing body, the FCC, might fine NBC/NFL and if they do, M.I.A. might be on the hook for the bill (via Billboard).
M.I.A. (foolishly?) has reportedly signed a contract with the NFL that indemnifies the NFL against such fines. I’m guessing this was a preplanned act, and that M.I.A.’s label said they would foot the bill – call me a cynic. The FCC previously fined television station CBS over Janet Jackson’s infamous “wardrobe malfunction” back in 2004, to the tune of $550,000. A finger should only be a fraction of a nipple, right?
No Surprise: Madonna Experiences Album Sales Increase
Apparently performing in front of a billion trillion people will inspire a portion of them to buy your music. So that’s why Madonna did it! Madonna’s new single, Give Me All Your Luvin’, has sold 100,000 copies in 3 days, which is better than her 2008 single, 4 Minutes featuring Justin Timberlake (via Billboard). But it’s not just the new song that is seeing a sales increase – her old albums are also getting a nice boost. Madonna’s top 10 digital sellers are up 1700%. This is still early days, so next week’s numbers will have the true impact. We’ll also find out if Madonna has murdered M.I.A. for upstaging her. There’s no such thing as bad press.
TiVo Says Madonna was Watched More Than The Super Bowl Itself
TiVo is great for recording shows and skipping commercials, or rewinding the show several times so that you can understand that confusing and intellectual Family Guy plot. “So can people understand the baby when he talks?” If you don’t like football, TiVo is great for skipping the Super Bowl and getting straight to the, er, good stuff – the half time show. Madonna’s half time show was 16% higher than the average of the game itself (via Hollywood Reporter). However, specific moments of the game (specifically Tom Brady butt shots) had a higher viewing than the halftime show.
The most popular commercial, according to TiVo stats, was a Doritos commercial. Since the game started at 11:30pm in London, I saw little of the game and the commercials, so I’ve posted the commercial below in case you wanted to see it, or if you wanted to be enticed to buy some Doritos.

Non-Super Bowl News! Paul McCartney to Play the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee?
NME via the Sun, and not Paul McCartney, are reporting that Paul McCartney is set to perform at a concert benefit to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. This year marks the 60th year in which the Queen has ruled Britain, and celebrations are planned throughout London. The concert is being organized by boy band Take That’s Gary Barlow, and will also feature Tom Jones, Ed Sheeran, and some other crap pop acts that you likely won’t know or care about. The official announcement is coming tonight on Barlow’s One Show. So basically, Paul isn’t appearing but you’ve now just gotten suckered into watching his show to find this out.
