Morning Music Notes – It’s Not Unusual for Jack White to Team Up With Everyone
Jack White to Collaborate with Tom Jones
Jack White, member of 18,000 bands, is now teaming up with Tom Jones (via Consequence of Sound). The room goes silent as the under 25 crowd wonders who Tom Jones is. Jack White’s Third Man Records (which you can see on American Pickers this upcoming Monday) has been running The Blue Series, which features collaborations ranging from Stephen Colbert to Insane Clown Posse. Tom Jones joins this, er, illustrious list.
It Takes Money to Make Money – Spiderman: Turn off the Dark Sets Broadway Records
Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark is the Broadway musical that Bono and The Edge from U2 have been working on. The production became a bit of a laughing stock, as it has been NINE YEARS in the making, with long dress rehearsals, the scrapping of actors and scripts, various injuries, and Carrot Top as the lead (okay, that last one isn’t true – yet). It turns out all the pain was worth the gain – the musical became the highest single-week grossing show in Broadway history (via Gigwise). It should be noted that the price of tickets requires you to mortgage your house.
“The musical as grossed almost $3m over nine performances last week, which has broken the previous record held by Wicked, which grossed $2.2 million over eight shows in 2011. Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark is rumoured to be the most expensive musical in history, costing an estimated $70 million.”
Do you remember when U2 contributed that (awesome) song to the Batman movie soundtrack? Now they jump ship and are sleeping with Spiderman? I see a trend here, as they USED to be Apple iPod sellers, then jumped ship to Blackberry for their interact concert features. Wherever the dollars are, right boys?
Nickelback Responds to Black Keys’ Slamming Them – No Blood Was Drawn
Its been a rough few months from the boys at Nickelback. Despite continuing to pad their bank accounts from sellout arenas and a new album, the guys have been knocked in the media – first for playing at the half time show of the Thanksgiving Day NFL matches, and now by Patrick Carney from the Black Keys. They responded to the Detroit Lions fiasco by making a rather entertaining Funny or Die sketch, mocking the incident.
This time, they took the high road again, and will not fight Patrick Carney in a steel cage match. Nickelback tweeted, “Thanks to the drummer in the Black Keys calling us the Biggest Band in the World in Rolling Stone. Hehe.” Bastards – don’t provoke the Carnster (trademarked new nickname) or he’ll beat you with his drum sticks. Seriously Nickelback, GO AWAY.
Dave Grohl Joins Another Band
Like Jack White, Dave Grohl is another guy who likes to whore himself out to other bands. Dave Grohl, Nirvana and Foo Fighters legend, is teaming up with hair-metal band Ratt (via Guardian). Apparently it’s NOT for a Ratt record, and the details are sketchy (read: non-existent). Are they on the new Foo Fighters or Them Crooked Vultures album? Again, I DON’T KNOW. But guesses are fun. Maybe it’s for a promo for PeteHatesMusic and I’m leading you all astray….
