Listen! Hot Chip – Atomic Bomb (William Onyeabor Cover)
William Onyeabor – who the hell is he and why are bands covering him? Onyeabor made a bunch of African synth-based music in the 70s and 80s. David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label put out some of his stuff last year, and he’s experienced a ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ Rodriguez-esque rise to fame, with a documentary and concert. For Record Store Day, bands are covering some of William Onyeabor’s stuff.
PHM favs Hot Chip tackle Atomic Bomb, and put a Hot Chipian spin on it, in that it sounds like a brand new Hot Chip song, which I suppose it is to the people who don’t know William Onyeabor. Give the dancey track, with some cool percussion rhythms (AND AN ATOMIC BOMB EXPLOSION), a listen below. Man, I could really go for another Hot Chip record right about now.
