Morning Music Notes – College Dropout, Harvard Lecturer

Beady Eye are an interesting band. Made up of Oasis minus Noel Gallagher, people were split between whether or not they would be Oasis Redux or if it would show Noel was essentially Oasis. The first album showed arguments for more of the latter. However, roping in Dave Sitek to produce their second album BE, the band stormed back with incredible singles Flick of the Finger and Second Bite of the Apple. The band have a new video for another track from BE, called Soul Love.

The video is pretty simple (read: boring) and the song is relatively straight forward. A simple rhythm, relaxed vocals from Liam Gallagher, and you have yourself the Beady Eye formula. Unfortunately, BE devolves into simpler and worse variations of Soul Love, and not more ballsy, slightly experimental rock like Flick of the Finger, but that’s another story. Guess who is a Harvard lecturer? The perhaps unsurprising answer: Kanye West. He spoke at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, with Kanye’s creative art agency (DONDA) creative director Virgil Abloh. He also gave out free tickets to his show. Watch a snippet of the video here. (via Pitchfork)

Lana Del Rey’s short film Tropico will be released December 1. If it’s like her music videos, it’ll have Lana copying many clothing styles from the earlier half of last century. The film is rumoured to be the farewell project of her short music career. (via Gigwise)

Jack White: jive turkey or turkey drive? Based on a post on Third Man Records’ website, it’s the latter, as White will cohost The Great Third Man Turkey Drive. You can bring items and non-perishable foods to a record store in Nashville, should you live or be in the area. (via Billboard)

Jay-Z came under fire for continuing his relationship with Barneys, despite the accusations of Barneys doing some racial profiling of its customers (and we’re not talking white racial profiling here). Jay-Z has issued a further statement, noting “While I await the findings of the Attorney General’s Office, I have agreed to move forward with the launch of BNY SCC collection under the condition that I have a leadership role and seat on a council specifically convened to deal with the issue of racial profiling.” It’s difficult to walk away from money, no matter how rich you are.
