Coldplay: “We Know Our Lyrics are Shit”
Well well, how’s that for a headline, kids? The direct quote from Chris Martin is “I know our lyrics are a bit shit, but (the ones for ‘Charlie Brown’) I like them a lot.” (via NME). 5 albums, and millions of albums sold, containing grade school rhymes about love, and Chris Martin now has the courage to say he doesn’t like his lyrics. Well, we know your next task – do NOT read another sappy love song. Although those ‘made for stadium’ choruses sure are fun to sing with 20,000 other people.
Martin admitted that Rihanna’s appearance on ‘Princess Of China’ was his album highlight. “Because we put the whole thing through as a story and there’s a boy and a girl part, we thought ‘who would we like to play the part of the girl?’ ‘Princess Of China’ was very much a back and forth, a duet.
“Top of our list was Rihanna. Bottom of our list was nobody else. We waited about a year and a half to pluck up the courage to ask her. That’s my favourite bit of the album. It’s the only bit I can bear to listen to because I’m not on it.”
He previously said: “She has such an amazing voice and it’s so different to mine. When the vocal happened I thought ‘Wow, you sound different’ but I think that’s also because she was singing a different song to what we are used to hearing from her and it is written by a bloke from Devon.”
The new album, Mylo Xyloto, is out in North America on Tuesday. You can check out random songs on iTunes, with one new song streaming each day leading up to the album release.
