Morning Music Notes – Admitting To Being a Blatant Copycat
Cannes to Screen Amy Winehouse Doc
Documentary maker (or documentarian for those fancy folks) Asif Kapadia is teaming with Universal Music to make a documentary about the late Amy Winehouse (via Hollywood Reporter). The film will be shown at Cannes, where they hope to find a buyer.
“Amy was a once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone’s attention; she wrote and sung from the heart, and everyone fell under her spell. But tragically, Amy seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention, her troubled relationships, her global success and precarious lifestyle. As a society we celebrated her huge success, but then we were quick to judge her failings when it suited us” said Kapadia and producer James Gay-Rees. Kapadia and Gay-Rees worked on the award-winning doc Senna before, too.
Blogs are all about judging failings when it suits us – that’s wrong?
Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline Sales Soar
As I touched on in yesterday’s Morning Music Notes, people of Boston and those affected by the Boston Marathon bombings have rallyed behind Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline. The track originally hit number 4 in 1969, and now has rebounded to hit number 33 on the Pop Digital Songs chart many years later (via Billboard). 19,000 copies of the track were sold, up 597% (which seems low actually). 8.7% of all sales were from the Boston area, showing that the song and tragedy has reached more than just Boston. Interestingly, digital music sales dropped 18% in Boston the week after the bombings. You would think with people being couped up in their homes during a couple of days of terror, they might want to buy some calming music to pass the time.
Only in America: Vanilla Ice to Get Amish Reality Show
In how many countries could you be a one-hit wonder (* debatably two) and then get a home improvement reality show and now an Amish reality show? Welcome to the world of Vanilla Ice aka Robert Van Winkle. The show will be called Vanilla Ice Goes Amish and will air on DIY Network in the States later this year (via NME). The show will take place in Ohio, with Vanilla Ice focusing on the community’s construction projects. Are cameras allowed in Amish communities? All I know about Amish communities is likely terribly inaccurate movies and TV show portrayals.
Will.i.am Admits He Sucks (Well, Not Directly)
Will.i.am might be talentless, but at least he can talk about it – after it blows up on the Internet (unrelated: do we really need to capitalize Internet?). He recently told KIIS FM in Los Angeles the truth about his track, with the worse excuse ever (via Hypebot).
“Arty is a dope producer, so I wrote this song to ‘Rebound’ this last year. I got in touch with Arty and showed it (to) him, did a different version to it cause I asked him to make it newer ’cause I don’t just wanna take your song and rap over it. But in a year’s time, time’s gone by, (and) we preferred writing over and using the (original) ‘Rebound.’ I’m a fan of Arty. I think he’s great and the world needs to know about how talented those guys are,” he added. “It’s sad that’s turned into a fiasco.”
Russian DJs Arty and Mat Zo need to either ride the wave of publicity or distance themselves from the talentless void that is will.i.am.
Watch! Two Door Cinema Club – Handshake (NSFW)
I only say NSFW since MTV banned the video. Apparently being headless is creepy and unsuitable, but horny teenagers can fuck what they want in primetime. Well, there might be murder and playing with the bodies a little bit in this video. But anyway, Two Door Cinema Club have a new video for their track Handshake. Handshake – more like headshake. Check out the bristling synth and guitar track below.
