Morning Music Notes – They’re Not Super Groups If You’re the Only Thing Super About Them
“Outkast Reunion” in Store, As Big Boi and Andre 3000 to Guest on Frank Ocean Track
There were rumblings about an Outkast reunion taking place on a Frank Ocean track, but then it supposedly getting killed by Andre 3000, as he doesn’t want a reunion track to be given to someone else. Andre 3000 is already on the Frank Ocean track, Pink Matter. Now Big Boi has added a verse to the track, killing Andre 3000’s dream (via Pitchfork).
I’m not sure if the track will be on some deluxe or extended edition, but it will supposedly be out next week – so I guess it’ll be a one-off / single? Don’t get bogged down in the details – Big Boi and Andre 3000 will both be coming out of your stereo (not literally) on a new track.
Dave Grohl Likes His Super Groups
If Dave Grohl continues his current collaborative and recording schedule, he’ll earn royalties on just about every song played on the radio in 2025. Besides being in the Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures, formerly in Nirvana and the recent Nirvana ‘reunion’ band, plus guest spots with Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, Garbage, etc etc, the man is debuting a super group called Sound City Players at this year’s Sundance Film Festival (via NME).
It is assumed this will be a one-off gig, with contributors to his Sound City documentary, which is airing at the festival. No matter who is in the band, chances are it’ll be better than Mick Jagger’s Super Heavy group.
Google Maps and Spotify: Coming to Cars Near You
Good news for Google Map lovers like myself. Hyundai and Kai cars will start integrating Google Maps into its telematics systems by 2014 (via Tech Crunch). Things will kick off with the 2014 Kia Sorento CUV, and will hopefully not unceremoniously be replaced by Apple Maps down the line. The vehicles will utilize Google’s Send2Car feature, which will send you send info from your phone to the car’s mapping system.
Do you want more music technology in cars? Well, you’re in luck! Spotify and Volvo have teamed up to launch Spotify’s music streaming service in Volvo’s vehicles (via Wired). It’s an all-Swedish love affair (something I’ve been desperately trying to achieve myself, if you catch my drift). No word on the launch date or how exactly the service will be used.
Watch! Kendrick Lamar – Backseat Freestyle
Kendrick Lamar still hasn’t “clicked” for me, but since Rich loves him so much, I figured I’d post his latest video so Rich doesn’t push me down the stairs again. The track is off of Kendrick’s much loved debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d city.
In the video for Backseat Freestyle, we see an LA Kings jersey getting repped – winning a championship makes hockey cool! Thanks to “Sherane”, this video might not be suitable for your workplace (given your office’s views on a girl exposing her booty in a thong and shaking it for a minute straight). Check it out below.
