Morning Music Notes – Disasters = Benefit Concerts
Hurricane Sandy Benefit Parts 2 and 3: Grizzly Bear, Cults, The Antlers, More
December 12 might have it’s fancy, big name artists at their Hurricane Sandy benefit, but there’s another benefit that might be more your style. On December 14, acts such as Grizzly Bear, Sleigh Bells, the Antlers, and Cults will take to Terminal 5 in New York City, with proceeds going to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City (via Pitchfork). Sort of sounds like it’s a made up fund, but it has its own website, so it must be real.
There’s a third benefit on the books, and surprisingly Los Angeles is helping out. There will be the awesomely named “We Hate Hurricanes: A Night of Comedy to Benefit Victims of Hurricane Sandy” that will feature Beck, the overrated Aziz Ansari, Will Ferrell, Jon Hamm, Sarah Silverman, and more. Does this mean all these acts or going to sing, or that Beck needs to crack some jokes?
Andrew W.K. and the Middle East – The Story That Just Won’t Die
Andrew W.K. was supposed to go the Bahrain and the U.S. Department of State’s Cultural Ambassador. Then he wasn’t. Then he issued a statement. And now, he said fuck it, he’s going to Bahrain anyway (via NME).
Bahrain have personally invited him, which is weird since Bahrain isn’t actually a real person. Andrew W.K. went on to say “In the face of a lot of disappointment and confusion there has been an incredible amount of support, especially from Bahrain. They’ve now invited me personally, regardless of whether or not my own country wants me to go, and we’re actively working on that.”
Nick Oliveri Joins Queens of the Stone Age in the Studio
Clearly, Queens of the Stone Age’s motto for this album is “anyone is welcome to record with us.” They’ve had Dave Grohl re-enter the mix, and Trent Reznor has also worked with the band during their recording. One of the least likely people you’d guess to rejoin the band would be Nick Oliveri, who was kicked out of the band in 2004 by Josh Homme, and also charged with a whack of stuff last year.
Well, accordingly to a Facebook post on another Oliveri project, Mondo Generator, Nick recorded both with Kyuss and with QOTSA. “NEWS: Nick has re-joined Kyuss, and has recently recorded his vocals on a new Queens of the Stone Age song! Stay tuned.” This isn’t Twitter, you can give us more news in one go – stop teasing (via Stereogum).
Listen! Golden Grrrls – We’ve Got…
Some gritty indie pop out of Glasgow, Scotland. The band are Golden Grrrls, which makes me think of both a bear and a trio of old ladies at the same time. Probably not the image they are going for. They have a track called We’ve Got…, which is off of next year’s debut album. Give it a listen below.
