Morning Music Notes – Kurt Cobain: The Musical
Thom Yorke’s Atoms for Peace Album Out in January?
Radiohead fan(atical) site, At Ease, reported over the weekend that Atoms for Peace are going to release their debut album in January. No proof was offered with the report, which noted the album will be called AMOK, will have 9 tracks, and will be out January 28, 2013. However, further work done by nerds on the Internet reveal that the tracklisting showed up briefly on the XL Recordings website on the weekend, as did the release date, which is still active. Good job, geeks!
Some screengrabs of the tracklisting were posted, and you can see the 9 tracks of the Thom Yorke / Flea / Nigel Godrich / Joey Waronker band below. I’ll be running around the house with excitement until the release day.

Kurt Cobain Musical Will Never Happen
Kurt Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, has denied claims that a Broadway musical based on the Nirvana singer’s life is being made (via NME). In October, Sam Lufti (of Britney Spears trial infamy) said that he is managing Courtney Love and working with her on a project about Kurt. Who do you trust? History says, um, neither.
Last month, it was revealed that a sitcom is being made called Smells Like Teen Spirit. It seems Love needs the money more than we think.
No Doubt Offends Native Americans with New Video
No Doubt recently debuted their new video for Looking Hot (named after me) the other day, and then pulled it right away after learning that the imagery offended Native Americans. They didn’t know that burning them alive in their video was offensive?! The clip contained all kinds of Native American stereotypes, such as tee-pees, feather headdresses, and smoke signals (via Rolling Stone). The band issued a statement, saying:
“As a multi-racial band our foundation is built upon both diversity and consideration for other cultures. Our intention with our new video was never to offend, hurt or trivialize Native American people, their culture or their history. Although we consulted with Native American friends and Native American studies experts at the University of California, we realize now that we have offended people. This is of great concern to us and we are removing the video immediately. The music that inspired us when we started the band, and the community of friends, family, and fans that surrounds us was built upon respect, unity and inclusiveness. We sincerely apologize to the Native American community and anyone else offended by this video. Being hurtful to anyone is simply not who we are.”
I’m guessing those Native American studies experts are going to get the tomahawk treatment for poor advice.
Toronto’s Masonic Temple to Close
Toronto’s legendary Masonic Temple on Yonge Street is slated to close according to the owners of the concert venue, Bell Media (via Spinner). You know Toronto should put there, and I’m sure developers and planners haven’t thought of this yet – put up some condos!
The building, at Davenport Street on Yonge Street, is 95 years old, and has been the home to many great shows over the years. Recently, it has been home to MTV Canada, where I saw Matthew Good do a session a few years ago. MTV Studios are now moving to 299 Queen St. and don’t need the Masonic Temple anymore.
Bands that have played the Temple include Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, The Band, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Soundgarden, to name a few.
Watch! k-os – The Dog is Mine
Toronto hip hopper and rocker, k-os, is about to release his double album, BLack on BLonde. The album has been delayed until January 2013, due to issues with sampling clearances. He also now has a video for a track that you might have already heard – The Dog is Mine.
The video features k-os with a band full of rocker girls, as well as a bit of a side story outside of the jam session. Check out the video for the upbeat, Lenny Kravitz-esque rock song, The Dog is Mine.
