Man Jumps from Space, Helmet Cam Captures Everything
Man landed on the moon not so long ago (okay, 40+ years ago), and that was considered a miracle. Now we have guys jumping from the edges of the stratosphere just for fun (and for Red Bull’s advertising). As we reported back in February, Red Bull might not give you wings, but it will help fund a jump from 128,000 ft above the Earth. The jump took place yesterday, and you can see highlights of the jump below. There’s also a helmet cam video floating around.
Thankfully, nothing bad happened, but I’m sure jumper Felix Baumgartner shit his pants a few times. I do when I jump down from the couch when hungover, so I can’t imagine how space would be. After the jump, he said “The exit was perfect but then I started spinning slowly. I thought I’d just spin a few times and that would be that, but then I started to speed up. It was really brutal at times. I thought for a few seconds that I’d lose consciousness. I didn’t feel a sonic boom because I was so busy just trying to stabilize myself. We’ll have to wait and see if we really broke the sound barrier. It was really a lot harder than I thought it was going to be.”
As noted by AllThingsD, Baumgartner’s top speed was Mach 1.24 — or 833.9 miles per hour. All of this means is that Baumgartner is the first human being to break the sound barrier without being in some kind of vehicle. Just your average Sunday.
Interestingly, TechCrunch reports that Google wanted to try and use Google Glass , but a few factors prevented it from being used. The main factor was Felix didn’t want to look like a dork when he landed.
