Morning Music Notes – Grohl Gets By With a Little Help From His Friends
Dave Grohl and his Sound City Friends
As we mentioned last month, and tweeted last night, Dave Grohl has announced a shitload of great musicians for this Sound City Players super group, debuting at the Sundance Festival. Dave Grohl is bringing together Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear from Nirvana, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett from Foo Fighters, Rage Against the Machine’s drummer Brad Wilk, Stevie Nicks, Chris Goss, Alain Johannes, Rick Springfield, John Fogerty and Rick Nielsen, and more. What, no more Paul McCartney?!
The band will play January 18 as part of the Sundance Film Festival, where Dave Grohl’s Sound City documentary will debut.
Justin Timberlake to Release New Music Very Soon?
This seems like it could be applied to guess that Justin Timberlake is releasing new music. JT tweeted “Thursday, January 10th, 2013 at 9:01 am PST…” so surely he must be releasing new music today, right? Maybe that’s when his next massage is scheduled and he was drunk and was trying to put it in Google Calendar – it happens.
Timberlake hasn’t released anything since 2006, and there are also rumours that he’s worked with Jay-Z and Beyonce. Let’s not forget that Timberlake has been busy with Myspace – maybe it’ll be a disappointing announcement from them instead.
How to Make Money: Fake Tickets
The misnamed Good Time Entertainment has allegedly scammed music fans out of roughly £3,000,000 ($4,800,000 Cdn). The company made this money by selling fake tickets to gigs such as Paul McCartney, Jay-Z, Kings of Leon, and festivals like T in the Park, V Festival, and Benicassim (via NME). One time PHM contributor Millar and I were at a Tool gig at a theatre and the guys behind us paid $600 for fake tickets – I can feel everyone’s pain.
However, the defendants’ are lucky in that they know who scammed them and can take them to court, which they are doing. The prosecutor said “They (Good Time Entertainment) created 100% profit for themselves because they took the money without providing anything in return. Having had the money transferred into a bank account controlled by the defendants the money was removed from the bank account.” The trial is ongoing, but hopefully the bastards are guilty.
Surprise – Azealia Banks’ Twitter Rage Equals a Sales Increase
I won’t rehash the whole thing, but over the past week, Azealia Banks and Angel Haze have been exchanging nasty tweets and then diss tracks. Azealia Banks even called Perez Hilton a faggot. There were rumours of a lost record contract, which ended up just being rumours. What was the outcome of all of this? Banks’ 1991 EP re-entered Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart at No. 32 (via Billboard). The EP went up 18%, selling just under 1,000 copies in the week ending Jan. 6. Banks’ single, 212, went up 3% to sell 3,000 downloads. Conclusion? Twitter meltdowns are good for albums sales but not as good as dying is (see: Houston, Whitney).
Listen! A$AP Rocky featuring Florence Welch – I Come Apart
When looking at A$AP Rocky’s tracklisting for LONG.LIVE.A$AP, the deluxe edition bonus track featuring Florence Welch (from Florence + the Machine) stood out as a little odd. Well now we can hear it and see if our imaginations were correct (mine is never correct). The track is I Come Apart and features Florence belting out the chorus. Check it out below.
