UpTo is an iPhone App That Uses Your Calendar to Meet Up With People
For the most part, when you use Foursquare or Facebook or (insert app name here) to tell the world you are “At McDonalds” or “In South London Prison”, people can’t bail you out really meet up with you, unless they are in the immediate area. Recently, the super creepy iPhone app, Highlight, lets you know when Facebook users with mutual friends or interests are in the area. Now, there is a new app that uses your calendar to increase these potential meet ups with friends (via TechCrunch). Or you could, you know, try TALKING to your friends to see what they are up to this weekend.
For those who lack initiative or planning skills, the UpTo iPhone app is for you. UpTo uses your iPhone calendar to collect the data from the personal calendars you use the most (Google, Apple, Outlook, etc.), and allows you to share this data with certain groups of friends. Just make sure you don’t send the “Skipping Work for St. Patrick’s Day” invite to your “Work Executive”. There is also a Chat function, which allows members of the “Skipping Work” group to say “Don’t forget to change your voice mail at work and fake cough”.
The co-founder and CEO of Rock City Apps, Greg Schwartz, told TechCrunch that people are a whopping 90% more likely to attend an event if it’s in their calendar. This might be why I am obsessed with getting dots into my iPhone calendar. The more dots, the more important I feel my life is. However, those dots say “Try and make your first friend” and is on repeat until it happens.
