Man to Attempt To Break the Sound Barrier, in the Name of Science and Red Bull

A man has decided that he wants to break the sound barrier – not in a plane or rocketship, but by jumping out of a capsule at 120,000 feet (via Geekologie). The project – Red Bull Stratos – is sponsored by Red Bull, who have fallen for their own “Red Bull Gives You Wings” marketing. Assuming the man, 41 year old Felix Baumgartner, lands safely, he will be handed a Red Bull have broken the record for longest and highest skydive, will be the first person to break the sound barrier outside of an aircraft, and will be crowned The Coolest Person Alive.

The launch is supposed happening in August. The funeral is scheduled for September From Space.com, “To make the dive, Baumgartner will ascend higher than four times the height of Mount Everest inside a custom-made pressurized capsule pulled up by a single helium-filled plastic balloon about 600 feet (182 meters) wide. Roughly 35 seconds after he jumps out, Baumgartner will reach supersonic speeds and will continue freefalling until he is about a mile above the ground, when he will deploy his parachute.”

Can Felix bring that cool Canadian lego spaceman with him for luck? Check out a Red Bull produced promo video below.
