RBC Royal Bank Bluesfest – Day 2 by the numbers
Tonight’s Main Stage Headliner: LMFAO
Party factor: 7. Lots of people there to party. Lots of them under 15 years of age.
Band 1 was: Charles Bradley and his Extraordinaires, and they are a new favourite of ours. This guy has been a bit of a nomad (his story is unbelievable!). The band lays down a solid groove, and Charles Bradley sounds like a rougher James Brown. Incredible.
Days in a row where singers have FLOORED us: 2. Yesterday was Grace Potter, today, Charles Bradley and Amber Coffman.
Hot Pants Factor: 8.7. I’ve never seen so many hot pants in one place before (but I’ve been told of more hot pants).
Age of DJ Cole Plante: 15. Wow – a performer that makes the YOUNG performers feel old.
Ratio of singers/band members in Dirty Projectors: 2:3. 4 singers in a 6 person band makes things sound extra awesome! Was really impressed by their stuff with a distinct groove… I think the crowd had a bit of trouble getting into some of their less-funky songs, but they were also ALL NEW. Pretty damn impressive to play them that well on their first show touring new material.
And good grief can Amber Coffman sing!
Minutes into Paul Oakenfold’s set before he crushed the place: 5. Beat Tiesto by 10 minutes (by my clock).
We could not possibly be more complimentary to Paul Oakenfold. He’s a lovely guy, and even seems like he was having fun; playing for a crowd that was a fraction of his normal audience (although per capita – we loved him no less!). A class act, and a master-class dj.
Day 3 tee-up: Now that the awkwardness of LMFAO yelling sex songs at teenagers is out of the way (if you were really party people, you would have gone to see Paul Oakenfold) we’re getting ready for a Friday night set of shows!
Tomorrow, we’re excited for Freelance Whales, Sleigh Bells, and City & Colour!
