Morning Music Notes – The Album That Won’t Stop Selling
Adele’s Album is Now 6th Best Selling Album of All-Time in the UK
Apparently London singer, Adele, didn’t get the memo: no one buys albums these days. With piracy and a recession and lots of musical options, it’s a fool’s game to try and sell records. Adele’s monster album, 21, earlier past Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon on Monday, and has now passed Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms to become the 6th best selling album of all-time in the UK (via NME). She has sold 4.15 million albums.
The top 5 are rounded out by Queen’s Greatest Hits at Number One, with sales of 5.83 million. Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles is Number Two with 5.04 million. Number Three is Abba’s Gold, (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? by Oasis is in fourth, and Michael Jackson’s Thriller sits in fifth place. No pressure for that next album, Adele.
Surprise? Whitney Houston had Cocaine in her System When She Died
Whitney Houston’s official cause of death was the (less than flattering) drowning in a bath tub. However, she was found with cocaine, marijuana, Xanax, Benadryl, and the muscle relaxant Flexeril in her system (via Rolling Stone). Cocaine and a heart condition might have contributed to her death, but the other substances somehow did not. The Houston family released a public statement via Patricia Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law. “We are saddened to learn of the toxicology results, although we are glad to now have closure,” reads the statement.
Sheeeeet! Michael K. Williams from The Wire to Play Ol’ Dirty Bastard in New Film
If you haven’t seen the amazingness that is The Wire, you now have weekend plans. My plans were to try to get my cat to beat box for a viral YouTube video, but after 2 years, I have given up. On The Wire, Michael K. William plays arguably the best character – Omar Little. Now, Michael will be playing Wu-Tang Clan’s Ol’ Dirty Bastard, in a new film called Dirty White Boy (via Yahoo). Dirty White Boy is about ODB, and his friendship with Jarred Weisfeld, who was a VH1 intern and then became a manager. No word on the release date, or perhaps more importantly, if Wu-Tang members or unreleased ODB songs will feature on the soundtrack.
Watch! Lana Del Rey on American Idol
Critics say she bombed on Saturday Night Live. They then said she redeemed herself on David Letterman. So how did Lana Del Rey do with her performance of Video Games on American Idol? Well, the crowd liked her. I personally didn’t like her rendition of some of the vocals, perhaps because I’ve heard the album version 100 times and want a near-replica of that when I listen to it. That being said, it’s still a good track, and not worthy of hate posts, ripping apart her performance. Check it out and judge for yourself.
