Morning Music Notes – Moving a Million
Justin Timberlake Sells Nearly A Million Albums in Week 1
I don’t know what the industry projections were, but Justin Timberlake has turned the clock back to the N Sync days – his hair is now curly and stupid looking again new album sold a whopping 968,000 copies (via Billboard).
JT’s previous albums sold 684,000 (FutureSex/LoveSounds) and 439,000 (for the terribly named Justified). When he was with N Sync, Timberlake topped over 2 million in a debut week, which is the largest selling album in SoundScan’s history, since it started tracking in 1991. The 20/20 Experience becomes the 19th largest selling album in SoundScan’s history.
To all the negative headline writers who have been saying “Timberlake fails to sell one million copies” – I think 19th all-time is nothing to be ashamed up. I have the 19th highest score all-time in the original Donkey Kong and the ladies can’t get enough of me (note: one or all parts of this story may be made up).
Alex Turner Joins New Queens of the Stone Age Album
Arctic Monkeys frontman and secret crush of mine, Alex Turner, is joining the big cast of guest stars on the new Queens of the Stone Age album (via NME). Turner joins Josh Homme and a gang that includes Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, Elton John, and Jake Shears. This is going to be weird and hopefully as awesome as it sounds as I’m typing it. The band’s 6th album will be out around the time my next scheduled shower is – June.
Pitchfork Music Fest Adds Some More Bands
Online music site Pitchfork and their Pitchfork Music Festival have announced some more acts. The Chicago festival takes place July 19-21 in Chicago’s Union Park, and will feature lots of people dressing ironically and being as snarky as possible. It will also feature a whack of new bands, added to the original headliners of Belle & Sebastian, Bjork, and R Kelly (no, I’m not making that last headliner up). Some of the latest acts added include M.I.A., Yo La Tengo, Solange, Wire, Lil B, Savages, Toro Y Moi, METZ, Low, Pissed Jeans, Autre Ne Vuet, Blood Orange, and Woods. Full band line up and ticket info can be found at their website.
Listen! Phoenix – Entertainment (Blood Orange remix)
Blood Orange did a hell of a job with Solange and her tracks Losing You and Lovers in the Parking Lot. His latest effort is a remix of Phoenix’s new track, Entertainment.
The track somewhat oddly features Mutya Keisha Siobhan, who are the original reformed Sugababes. They provide new vocals and harmonies, changing the feel oo the intro to the song. Check it out below.
