CMW Critical Conclusions for…Boy (Canadian Music Week 2013 concert review)
While I was busy partying at the Prism Prize gala, photographer Martin was trying his hands at the reviewing side of things. He found out that it actually is as easy as it looks. Check out his thoughts on the final night of CMW below.

PeteHatesMusic ended Canadian Music Week on an appropriate note, with the duo Boy. German born Sonja Glass and Swiss Valeska Steiner played to a full house at the Dakota Tavern and did they ever. Moving the crowd – yes, that is a Toronto crowd that is actually physically shifting from side to side to music, from the first stroke of the acoustic guitar, the ladies from Boy continued on their best rendition of Feist like calming vocals.

Venue: The Dakota Tavern
First Impressions: Cute, quaint, acoustic. Strong vocals and basis of the music, as the guitar and little drum pad that Sonja was using while tapping her foot became background to the vocals.
Stage Presence: 9/ 10 – The carpeted and low lit setting of the Dakota Tavern seemed perfect for this Feist-like performance. (I think I used Feist twice, I hope Pete doesn’t edit me down)

Crowd Reaction: 9/ 10 or even maybe a 10 – Singing along to Lonely Boy and a repetitive back vocal of ahhahhhahhaa to Railway which sounded awesome.
Banter: 9/10 – Quotes: “This song is about musical revenge. If you ever meet Boris from Zurich in Toronto don’t be nice to him” when introducing the appropriately named song Boris. They covered Lonely Boy because “we like the Black Keys”
Water/alcohol/neither: Beer and water mix, although the lead singer drank a mix bevy. Lemonade, or something more exotic, or maybe just a hoegaarden. Why does Pete care?
The Last Word: 9/10 – Left that warm and fuzzy feeling.
