CMW Critical Conclusions for… Inlet Sound (Canadian Music Week 2013 concert review)

Day 1 of the 2013 Canadian Music Week is now complete. PeteHatesMusic is covering random bands throughout the week, and giving a gig by gig review as they happen. Below is our Canadian Music Week Critical Conclusions for.. Inlet Sound.

Venue: The Horseshoe Tavern

First Impressions: The entire band jumped into a song simultaneously as the lights came on, immediately bringing the room’s attention to them – very nice. I also noticed that the singer had the stereotypical folk rock cap. Also, you can almost never go wrong with a fiddle in a band (didn’t a wise guy once say that?)

Stage Presence: 7.5 / 10 – Lots of bobbing and movement in one place; about what you expect from a folk rock band.

Crowd Reaction: 7.5 / 10 – Decent applause, mixed with a clap along.

Number of times they said their band name: Once, before the last song.

Number of girls at the table next to me who didn’t know where Banff was: Two, if I heard them correctly. The guys picking them up were asking them about the west and they didn’t fare too well.

Water/alcohol/neither: I didn’t see any liquids being consumed but there were mixed drinks on the stage floor.

The Last Word: 8 /10 – The vocal quality matched the studio tracks that I’ve heard, which is always refreshing. The band reminds me, perhaps vocally the most, of a mix of Death Cab for Cutie and The Decemberists. Lofty comparisons, I know, but with some stronger and more diverse choruses, I wouldn’t put it past them.
