Morning Music Notes – No More Stompin’
Canadian Country Legend Stompin’ Tom Connors Has Died
He may be gone, but he’ll live on in hockey arenas around Canada. The singer of the Hockey Game, as well as Canada Day, Up Canada Way; Bud The Spud; and Sudbury Saturday Night, passed away last night. Stompin’ Tom Connors was well known in Canada but not so much outside of its borders, and he was fine with that. In anticipation of his passing, he wrote a letter to his fans on his website, noting:
“Hello friends, I want all my fans, past, present, or future, to know that without you, there would have not been any Stompin’ Tom. It was a long hard bumpy road, but this great country kept me inspired with its beauty, character, and spirit, driving me to keep marching on and devoted to sing about its people and places that make Canada the greatest country in the world.
I must now pass the torch, to all of you, to help keep the Maple Leaf flying high, and be the Patriot Canada needs now and in the future. I humbly thank you all, one last time, for allowing me in your homes. I hope I continue to bring a little bit of cheer into your lives from the work I have done.”
Stompin’ Tom Connors was 77 years of age. Why was he called Stompin’ Tom? Because he liked to stomp the heel of his left boot to the beat of his music. Sometimes nicknames are as simple as that – that’s why I’m called ‘run away from cute girls.’
Check out The Hockey Song for the millionth time below, and realize just how Canadian you and Tom Connors truly are.

Kasabian’s Serge Pizzorno Stirs Glastonbury Rolling Stones Rumours
Serge Pizzorno sure knows how to stir shit up. The Kasabian man was talking about his band’s slot at London’s Hard Rock Calling event in June, and said “I hope ours is the most talked-about performance of the weekend, but that would be a miracle because the Rolling Stones are playing Glastonbury” (via Guardian).
The Rolling Stones have never played Glastonbury, despite being some of the first humans to occupy the planet Earth. With the Stones celebrating their 50th year of being a band, and with some 50th anniversary warm-up shows under their belt, it seems like Glastonbury rumours just make sense.
He’s Not The Guy I Associate With Intimate Wipes
Andrew WK might not be a good fit to be a cultural ambassador to Bahrain, but he’s good enough for Playtex’s Fresh + Sexy Wipes, whatever the hell those are (via NME). Andrew WK even has a statement about the role:
“Whether you just finished rocking a packed club or have an intimate encounter after a busy day, this product will make couples feel brand new. Fresh + Sexy Wipes were specially designed to help couples feel confidently clean, before and after they engage in sexual activity!”
What’s this sexual activity he’s referring to? Is this what I’ve been learning about on the Internet for all these years? Andrew WK will also be playing Fresh + Sexy party at SXSW this year. Expect lots of wipes to get used (or at least given away).
New Drake Song From Upcoming Album
Drake has a new song. I’m not a huge fan of it, so I’ll just link to 5AM in Toronto. Let me know if I judged too harshly – lyrics didn’t really do it for me. You’re rich and you think other rappers copy you – no one has rapped about that before! However, there are several stand out lines such as “That’s why every song sound like Drake featuring Drake.” Check it out at the link above.
Listen to Trent Reznor, Dave Grohl, and Josh Homme, All on the Same Track!
Dave Grohl’s Sound City documentary and associated soundtrack have been getting a lot of digital ink the past couple of months. With guest stars galore, Grohl didn’t hold back. The soundtrack for Sound City features a track called Mantra which stars Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age). Although the three of them are contributing to the new QOTSA album in some form, having them all on the same track seems to be a good decision. Grohl is the main singer, with Reznor dipping in later on, and Homme doing some backing vocal stuff throughout. The track is not a ballsy rocker for once from Grohl but a more subtle and layered track, which seems more like Reznor’s territory. Check out the seemingly unofficial release below.
