Morning Music Notes – Another Duet No One Wants
Haim Named BBC’s Sound of 2013
BBC has an annual feature where they announce the ‘Sound of 2013’ (or whatever year it is), based on the opinions of musicians, those sexy bloggers, DJs, and other people in the biz. The winner this year is California sister trio, Haim (via Telegraph). Other bands who were nominated include rapper Angel Haze (more on her later), Chvrches, and Kodaline, to name a few. Critics of the Sound of series say that the very fact they win makes them somewhat successful, and then it becomes one of self-fulfilling prophets that you read about in fantasy novels.
Oh Joy: Kanye West and Kim Kardashian to Record Duet for Their Child
You might’ve heard that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are having a baby, and then thought that the worst part of this “news” is how many fucking times we’re going to hear stories related to it over the next 9 or less months. Nope, the worst part about it is the planned duet between Kanye West and Kim Kardashian (via Gigwise).
For now, these are just rumours, and perhaps the Daily Star isn’t the most reliable place to get news. But ‘a source’ said to them, “Kanye’s really soppy. He wants Kim to lay down some vocals while she’s carrying his child. He thinks it’ll be cool for his son or daughter to listen to the track when they’re older.” Cool would be having Kanye West and his discography as your dad. No need to ruin the legacy by recording with Kim.
Adele Can’t Stop Selling Albums, Is Number 1 in 2012 (and 2011)
Adele – heard of her? Her 21 album was named the number one selling album in the United States in 2012. It sold a whopping 4.41 million copies in 2012, despite being released and selling 5.82 million in 2011, and being the number 1 selling album in 2011, too (via Rolling Stone).
Second place in 2012 was Taylor Swift with Red. One Direction took both third and fifth spots, with Mumford & Sons in fifth. Holy British domination! The number one single was Gotye, followed by Carly Rae Jepsen and the song that everyone loves to cover and spoof – Call Me Maybe.
Meanwhile, the best selling vinyl record of 2012 was Jack White’s Blunderbuss (via NME). This knocked out the classic Beatles record, Abbey Road, from the number 1 spot, which it has impressively held for the past 3 years.
Fight, Fight, Fight! Angel Haze Releases Azealia Banks Diss Track
Why can’t we be friends, why can’t we be friends? No seriously, Azealia, Angel – I want to be your friend. These New York rappers (well, Angel might not be according to Azealia) spent the better part of yesterday insulting one another on Twitter. It all started with Azealia Banks tweeting “Seriously, if you were not born and raised in NY…. DON’T CLAIM NY. YOU ARE NOT A NEW YORKER.”
Angel has a track called New York, which she says ‘she runs New York’, and she’s not from New York. She took the tweet to be about her, started up some good old Twitter insults, and even did some research! She tweeted “There’s no jealousy….you know who’s better. You’ve always known.” She then posted a link to a tweet Azealia wrote in May which read, “You know your the best out right now though! *hides mic behind back*”. Now that’s thorough.
Taking it a step further, Angel Haze then dropped a track called On the Edge which makes fun of Azealia Banks. The track makes fun of Azealia’s lack of an album and slow recording time (um, ouch?), as well the the line “I want you bitches so scared that you mental break/ So you’ll forever be broke with expensive taste”, which references the album title of Azealia’s delayed album. Check it out below.
