Morning Music Notes – Upstaging Your Younger Brother
Jay-Z Announces New Album and Samsung Galaxy Tie-In
If you missed it on our Twitter or Facebook last night a) you should follow @PeteHatesMusic and b) you missed the news that Jay-Z is dropped a new album on July 4. His pal Kanye West has a new album out on Tuesday, but it leaked last week and despite generally good reviews, is now yesterday’s news thanks to Jay-Z upstaging him.
The new album will be called Magna Carta Holy Grail. The biggest, jaw dropping thing about the album? I rap on it It’ll be free to the first million users of a specialized app on the Samsung Galaxy. The commercial below, which debuted during Game 5 of the NBA Finals, shows collaborators such as Pharrell Williams, Rick Rubin, Swizz Beatz, and Timbaland. The album will be out July 7 for non-Samsung app users.
This could be a game changer. Albums released right to your phone, exclusive access, and marketing, all rolled into one. The Wall Street Journal reports that Samsung will pay Jay-Z $5 per album, which means the 1 million free albums will net him $5 million.

Pink Floyd Coming to Back to Spotify, with a Catch
Pink Floyd tweeted that their classic album, Wish You Were Here, would be coming back to music stream service Spotify. If a streaming goal is met, then the rest of the catalogue will be unlocked (via Slash Gear). If Wish You Were Here is streamed 1 million times, which is a decently high number, then you can listen to other albums like Dark Side of the Moon. Couldn’t they team up with Samsung or something?
The most annoying thing for people who like to rig these kinds of things is that there is no counter to let fans know how close they are to the goal. Is this deal narcissistic of the band, or does it make good business cents sense?
That Took Awhile – Black Sabbath Back on Top After 43 Years
Black Sabbath’s new album is number 1 in the UK charts. When did this happen last? Um, 43 years ago (via Guardian). The album Paranoid hit the top spot back in 1970. Hopefully the band don’t have to wait another 43 years for another number 1 album, as I don’t think Ozzy has another 43 years in him.
Watch Beady Eye Play The Voice in the UK. No, Really!
It has come to this. Liam Gallagher’s Beady Eye played The Voice in the UK last night. You know, that ‘talent’ show that has judges like will.i.am. judging singing talent. The band played Second Bite of the Apple, backed by a horn section, while the judges rocked out. The whole thing feels wrong for some reason, like Liam and the lads need the attention, which to be honest, they maybe kind of do. Check out the footage below.
