Morning Music Notes – Things Come in 3s
Reunions and Coming Out of Hibernation
Yesterday, there was a slew of announcements regarding acts that had broken up or people thought were not recording again. Indie rock fans were over the sea moon when they heard that Neutral Milk Hotel would be playing their first show in 15 years (via Stereogum). They are playing 5 shows, with a few gaps to likely add more shows once they determine the Internet did in fact explode when they made this announcement. Check out the dates below.
Neutral Milk Hotel Tour Dates
Oct. 22 – Athens, GA @ 40 Watt Club (with Elf Power)
Oct. 23 – Athens, GA @ 40 Watt Club (with Half Japanese)
Oct. 25 – Asheville, NC @ Thomas Wolfe Auditorium (with Half Japanese, Daniel Johnston)
Nov. 28 – Taipei, Taiwan @ Hostess Club Festival
Dec. 01 – Tokyo, Japan @ Hostess Club Festival
Scottish producers Boards of Canada have ended their hinting and mysterious Record Store Day random release and announced a new album called Tomorrow’s Harvest. This follows 2006’s Trans Canada Highway EP. The album will be out on June 10.
The latest and clearly the most important reunion announcement is…TLC! If you thought your days of chasing (or not chasing) waterfalls were over, guess again. If you thought Lisa Left-Eye Lopes dying would stop them, you’re wrong! The remaining members Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas have a new album in celebration of their 20th anniversary. Yes, the Rock Hall of Fame ballot awaits them in just 5 years. The band have decided to not quite pull a Hologram Tupac on us all, but will resurrect Left Eye through digitally generated performances (via Hollywood Reporter). Yesterday’s announcement also marked 10 years since Left Eye Lopes died.
Amanda Palmer Wants Morrissey to Crowdfund an Album
The million dollar crowd funder, Amanda Palmer, wants Morrissey to crowdfund his next album. Morrissey has been without a record deal since 2009, yet regularly sells out 20,000 seat venues. Palmer writes for Salon and put forth an offer to help him (via Telegraph). Unless Palmer has led a perfect life, without eating meat, wearing furs, or supporting the British royals, Morrissey might give her the time of day.
Using a small sample size and no actual money, Palmer asked her 850,000 Twitter followers if they’d buy a Morrissey album for $5. She got 1,400 Yeses, or $7,000. Time to retire with that kind of money!
Panda Bear Talks Daft Punk
Totally missed this last week – blame the mind warping drugs I was subjected to in prison. Episode 5 of the Creators Project’s series on the Daft Punk collaborators is out. This episode features Panda Bear from Animal Collective. Like other artists talking about Daft Punk, he talks about their drive for that right sound.
