CMW Critical Conclusions for…Yacht Club (Canadian Music Week 2013 concert review)
Kicking off our coverage of Day 5 of Canadian Music Week is..Yacht Club.
Venue: Danforth Music Hall
First Impressions: I really dug the first track. Hello 80s! From afar, Yacht Club’s singer looks like Peter from Peter Bjorn and John (although it might’ve been my beer goggles). The band’s attire from left to right was also interesting. We had a guy who looked like he walked off the set of That 70s Show, mixed with a guy with dreads who didn’t match the rest of the band’s image. Nothing wrong with this – just visually interesting.
Stage Presence: 7 / 10 – The singer was not a great dancer (or so says my girlfriend). Is he drunk? See below. Bassist was the pretty cool and calm and got props from crowd.
Crowd Reaction: 6 / 10 – Unfortunately quiet. Granted info available generally said Doors at 8pm, a few fans might have missed out.
Banter: 8 /10 – “I live two blocks away” said singer Ben Cook, also noting that drummer Jesse Labovitz worked at Danforth Music Hall when he was 15. Cook also dedicated a song to the marijuana clinic that just opened up. “My chronic back pain and asthma will be thankful.”
Water/alcohol/neither: Moosehead beer for a few band members.
The Last Word: 7 /10 -Kind of a rock funk retro pop bled that I really enjoyed on some songs and found utterly average on others. Their songs were either 9s or 5s, hence the 7 rating. I didn’t know the band before tonight, and will see how their recorded material sounds.
