Changing Song Lyrics from One Beer to Another – The Price of a Sponsorship
Remember that classic Simpsons episode, where the Red Hot Chili Peppers play at Moe’s Tavern, and he asks them to change their lyrics? For some bands, changing lyrics for radio or promotion is sacred territory. For country star (who I’ve never heard of) Jason Aldean, a few bucks from Coors Brewing Company and his lyrics were cast away (via Digital Music News). Now, I would do anything for a beer (see: the night I spent in a shark tank covered in the blood of baby seals), but changing lyrics might not fly with me. The odd thing is, Aldean changed the lyrics from one beer to another – why couldn’t Coors pick another song?
Aldean’s reps provided a message to country music stations across the United States that read, “Jason Aldean is in the process of signing an endorsement deal with the Coors Brewing Company. With that, he has changed the “Shiner Bock” line in the song “Take A Little Ride” to “A Couple Rocky Tops”. We respectfully request you exchange this version with the one you are currently playing.” Check out the original and new lyrics to Take a Little Ride below. I’m surprised the song isn’t now call Take A Little Sip – of Coors Light!
Original Lyrics to Take a Little Ride
Been going round and round all day
Bailin’ some hay and stacking it all up
Can’t wait for the sun to go down,
Roll into town, shine the old truck up
Swing by the quick stop, grab a little Shiner Bock
Then ease on out your way
To your place around 8 o’clock
New and Improved Coors-Approved Lyrics to Take a Little Ride
Been going round and round all day
Bailin’ some hay and stacking it all up
Can’t wait for the sun to go down,
Roll into town, shine the old truck up
Swing by the quick stop, grab a couple Rocky Tops
Then ease on out your way
To your place around 8 o’clock
Seriously – Rocky Tops isn’t that powerful a promotion lyric, is it? That’s the best you can do, Coors?
