Toronto Lawyer Gets Apple Macbook Stolen, Blames and SUES Apple
This sounds like a story out of America, not nice, olde Canada. A Toronto lawyer, Michael Deverett, bought an Apple Macbook Pro and iPod Touch. He left them in his car when he went to a store, his car window was smashed, and the Apple products were taken. His lame rear view window stuffed animal collection was untouched. The natural reaction? Sue Apple (via Toronto Star)!
“Deverett sued Apple, claiming that theft rings in the U.S. had been targeting Apple store customers in the same way and Apple had a duty of care to warn store customers of the danger. Apple also serviced Deverett’s stolen computer for someone else even after Deverett called to tell them it was stolen.”
“In the end, Deverett settled for a $2,300 store credit from Apple and legal costs of $345, but he is not alone in asking whether manufacturers of expensive and coveted merchandise could be doing more to protect customers.”
This is absolutely ridiculous. People need to take responsibility for bad shit that happens to them. If you buy something expensive and it gets stolen, chances are it was stolen because it was expensive – duh. Everyone needs to stop blaming others for their misery and accept bad stuff happens. If someone steals my car (note: don’t steal my car), I’m not going to sue the auto company now, am I (hint: I will not). Maybe Apple should help with the relocation process, i.e.: if updates are being made to that computer via iTunes or other updating services, or if it is brought in for repairs and the serial number matches that of the stolen one. But wholly responsible? Absolutely ridiculous. Thoughts?

[…] Apple currently has a breathtaking store in Covent Garden in London, with exposed brick pillars and walls, and elegant looking glass ceilings and windows at parts. Now, it seems like Apple wants to open another store, this time in world-famous London department store, Harrods (via Digital Trends). The department store has been around for 163 years, and is known by locals and tourists to London as the department store in London. It is thought that the Apple store will operate inside Harrods department store, and might not have the Genius Bar. Now who am I going to ask to find my stolen Mac book? […]
