Morning Music Notes – Just Some Dead Guys Schilling for a Beer Company

BBC Sound of 2014 winner Sam Smith has good news and bad news. The bad is that he won’t be playing in my backyard for me, ever. Oh, and he also delayed his debut album In The Lonely Hour until June 17. The good news is he has given us a new track called Stay with Me.

Stay with Me has a different feel from Money on my Mind. Instead of the upbeat and slick production, we get a sparse piano track with a gospel/R&B choir accompanying Sam. Check it out below.

Yes, Smashing Pumpkins are still around, and yes, Billy Corgan is still the only original member from the 90s legends. The band will return with a self-described sound of “guitars, guitars, guitars, and more guitars” in two LPs set for release next year. One will be called Monuments to An Elegy and the other is Day for Night. Will they bounce back and own 2015? (via Pitchfork)

If you’re into the gossip rags, you would’ve read that Coldplay singer Chris Martin and Oscar winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow have announced their separation after 10 years of marriage and 2 interestingly named kids. And if you thought Coldplay wrote sappy love songs and break up songs before, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! (via Gigwise)

PHM interviewees Frightened Rabbit have lost a member. Guitarist and keyboardist Gordon Skene has left after 3 years in the band due to ‘differing opinions’. I’m guessing he secretly didn’t like Irn-Bru. (via Gigwise)

Bavaria has a beer commerical that is making the rounds on music websites. It is a clever take on famous dead pop culture icons (mainly musicians) who all hang out and drink Bavaria and avoid being seen by the outside world on their tropical island. Sure, it uses the likeliness of Kurt Cobain, John Lennon, Tupac, Elvis, and Marilyn Monroe, but that doesn’t mean it stomps on sacred ground, does it? Surely they would all star in this exact commercial if they were alive…Watch it before Courtney Love or Yoko Ono launch the inevitable lawsuit. Not quite sure how Jude got on the island, but I bet it’s a well paid gig.
