Mercury Prize Nominees

It’s that time of year again. The Barclaycard Mercury Prize nominees have been announced. The Mercury Prize honours the best British or Irish album of the year. Last year, Alt-J won for their excellent debut album, An Awesome Wave. This year is looking to be another tight race. Without further adieu, your alphabetical nominees:

Arctic Monkeys – AM
David Bowie – The Next Day

Disclosure – Settle
Foals – Holy Fire
Jake Bugg – Jake Bugg
James Blake – Overgrown
Jon Hopkins – Immunity
Laura Marling – Once I Was an Eagle
Laura Mvula – Sing to the Moon
Rudimental – Home
Savages – Silence Yourself
Villagers – Awayland

Arctic Monkeys previously won the award for their debut album, while Foals, Laura Marling, and David Bowie have been nominated in the past.

Heading into the week, the bookies had the following odds for the outright winners:

London Grammar – 9/4
Foals – 4/1
Steve Mason – 4/1
Laura Marling – 9/2
David Bowie – 11/2
Disclosure – 11/2
The Savages – 8/1
Primal Scream – 14/1
CHVRCHES – 16/1
King Krule – 16/1
Laura Mvula – 18/1
Outfit – 20/1
Tom Odell – 20/1
Peace – 22/1
Daughter – 25/1
These New Puritans – 25/1

Let’s see how these odds shake up now the nominees are actually known. The bookies’ favourite didn’t even get a nomination. I’m surprised Arctic Monkeys didn’t have any odds listed (maybe because their album came out 2 days ago and people weren’t sure if it made the nomination deadline).
