NXNE Critical Conclusions for The BB Guns (North By Northeast 2013 Concert Review)

We headed as far north as North By Northeast would take us, and checked out The BB Guns up on Bloor Street.

Venue: Lee’s Palace

First Impressions: Girl guitar assault. Fronted by 3 ladies, with Clint Rogerson (from Action Makes) on bass and Dan Arget on drums, the band blasted us with melodies and guitars from the get go.

Stage Presence: Ferocious yet playful. Moved around like rock stars, full of confidence.

Crowd Reaction: Exponentially better once people showed up. The early start time was a handicap, but the crowd bobbed along and reacted well after the tunes.

The Last Word: 7.5 /10 – The songs have great harmonies and timing despite tempo changes and musically explosive parts. I’m not entirely sure if it was by design, but a couple of the early tracks had the vocals drowned out by a combination of feedback and some guitar effect that drilled to the centre of my brain. Generally some good surf punk tunes from the Toronto band.
