14 Indie and Rock Songs About Love, Infatuation, and Worship – Part 2 – Happy Valentine’s Day!

I think Haddaway put it best when they said “What is love? Baby don’t hurt me. Don’t hurt me, no more.” Okay, maybe they didn’t put it best at all – that’s why we’re here. Last year, we gave you 14 indie and rock songs that make your heart skip a beat, like when you eat a 40 oz steak. These songs included Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps, The Knife – Heartbeats, Great Lake Swimmers – Your Rocky Spine, and a bunch others that you can check out over here.

This year, we have 14 more songs for you – apparently all the love songs in the world have not been written yet. Like yesterday’s sad indie song playlist, we tried to give you mainly new, indie songs because that’s what we do here at PeteHatesMusic. That, and drink lots of booze.

Check out our YouTube playlist below, and our Songza playlist, which includes the 14 tracks from last year, too. Then give us some love back – Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. Otherwise, I’m keeping these Batman Valentine’s Day cards all to myself. Note: this is also true because I do not have a date.

14 Happy Indie and Rock Songs About Love, Infatuation, and Worship – Part 2

Feel free to debate any of my lyrical interpretations – I don’t know a thing about love!

Muse – Madness: A song about the mysteries binding a relationship, and how madness often keeps people together.

Perfume Genius – Hood: If you put yourself out there for the one you’ve been longing for, it can be scary to reveal your true self.

The Lighthouse And The Whaler – Venice: About love and death, only one of which is guaranteed.

The Shins – Simple Song: As the title states, a simple song for something as simple as love (ha!).

Chromatics – Kill for Love: Killing for love – sign me up.

Sharon Van Etten – For You: This song is a few years old, but it’s an instant classic in terms of indie love songs. Lots of emotion on this beautiful track.

Best Coast – Boyfriend: If Bethany could just land that boyfriend she wants, she’d love him forever and ever.

Laura Marling – Ghosts: Moving past previous heartbreaks to focus on your current relationship.

Basia Bulat – Oh, My Darling: Loving your darling until the very end.

Bon Iver – Beth/Rest: Singer Justin Vernon says that the lyrics come from the innocence of a 14 year old. However, the music sounds like it comes from the 1980s.

Starfucker – Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second: A simple refrain about love, but love can be simple, or so Hollywood chick flicks tell me.

The Smiths – There is a Light That Never Goes Out: Perhaps the opposite of Starfucker (aka STRFKR) in terms of lyrical depth, Morrissey excels at lyrics, and this song about love is one of the better ones (even if there are some dark lyrics).

Miguel – Adorn: Miguel loves everything about the subject in his song and he just simply desires her.

Daft Punk – Something About Us: This song probably fits the least on this lift, given the musical style, but telling someone that you need and want them, and that there’s something about you two – well, that’s love.

Any good songs about love and relationships and all that gooey stuff that you think should be on our most recent list? Tell us on Twitter @PeteHatesMusic or in the comments!
