Morning Music Notes – Being a Nickelback Fan Can Cause Serious Bodily Harm

Post-Olympic Opening Ceremony Sales Boost

So who here watched the Queen jump out of a helicopter with James Bond on Friday night? If you have no clue what I’m talking about, you were either as drunk as I was, or you missed the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies. There was a LOT of music featured, including an opening shot of the Thames, featuring the awesomely named Fuck Buttons. They played Surf Solar, and NOT their aptly named song, Olympians. Performing at the venue were the Arctic Monkeys, Dizzie Rascal, Paul McCartney, Alex Trimble from Two Door Cinema Club, and a few others.

All of the music went on sale on iTunes immediately after the Opening Ceremonies, and impacted the iTunes charts. The Arctic Monkeys’ cover of Come Together and Alex Trimble’s song Caliban’s Dream both entered the Top 70 (via Gigwise). I’m not sure why a Beatles’ cover song was done when there was a BEATLES AT THE CEREMONIES! The other song played by Arctic Monkeys – I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor – also re-entered the top 100 (despite sounding a bit flat in the live performance). A compilation album of the Opening Ceremony music, called Isle of Wonder, went to number 1 in the charts in the UK, France, Spain, and Belgium, and number 5 in the USA (via Guardian). See, the Olympics is about much, much more than corporate sponsorship and capitalism!

More Stabby Stabby at Concerts: Fan Stabbed at a Tenacious D Show

This is a trend that I want to see less of – fat naked men in my house stabbings at concerts. I’ve said it before, and now I’m saying it again – concerts = fun. Leave the bullshit at home – I like NOT being stabbed at shows. During a show at Mandalay Bay’s House of Blues in Las Vegas, a fan was stabbed and the Tenacious D gig was shut down (via NME). A fight broke out and a man was stabbed in the leg. I’m guessing they were arguing over who was sexier – Jack or Kyle. The stab victim is expected to make a full recovery, while we will never know the outcome of the sexiest Tenacious D member.

Batman Composer Hans Zimmer Writes Benefit Song for Denver Victims

Stabbings at concerts have been a recent trend. Let’s hope shootings at the movies isn’t another new trend. After the horrific shootings during The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado, Batman composer Hans Zimmer has done something to help raise their spirits – he has composed a song called Aurora (via NME). As noted on his Facebook page, “‘Aurora’ is dedicated to those who lost their lives and were affected by the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado. I recorded this song in London in the days following the tragedy as a heartfelt tribute to the victims and their families.” A nice touch.

Nickelback Fan Tries to Sneak Into Gig, Falls Down 40-Foot Gorge Instead

Some say that Nickelback’s music sucks so bad, you wish you were dead. Well, even Nickelback fans are seriously hurting themselves, if not on purpose (I think it was on purpose). A Nickelback fan tried to sneak into a show at the Performing Arts Centre in Saratoga Springs, but instead fell down a 40-foot gorge and ended up in the hospital (via Gigwise). I consider this proof that listening to Nickelback can cause bodily harm. The 22 year old fan, Kevin Beaudette, fell into the Geyser Brook Gorge, and was rescued in a basket by the fire crew. I’m not sure what’s more embarrassing – having it publicly documented that you are a Nickelback fan, or that the fire department had to rescue you from a gorge in a basket.

Snoop Dogg Puzzled By Pot Bust, Banned from Norway for 2 Years

In a great tourism publicity boost for Norway, Snoop Dogg has been barred from entering Norway for 2 years after a pot bust last month (via Rolling Stone). Last month, alert cops brought their drug-sniffing dogs to Snoop Dogg, and – SURPRISE – he had 8 grams of pot in his luggage. He was also carrying more money than legally permitted, adding to his awesomeness in my eyes. Snoop Lion Dogg cannot enter Norway for 2 years, but really, how often is he in the area?

Listen! 50 Cent featuring Alicia Keys and Dr. Dre – New Day

50 Cent – what happened? You got shot, famously survived, had a huge first album, and then sort of disappeared. You promised you’d retire if Kanye West outsold you, Kanye outsold you, and then you didn’t retire – you did something worse, you released nothing of note. But now you’re back, with New Day, off of upcoming Street King Immortal. The song is actually a reworking of recent Alicia Keys song, New Day, and we get a new verse from Dr. Dre. If you don’t like Fiddy, you probably like the other 2/3 of the song, so check it out below.

[…] If you watched the London 2012 Summer Olympic Opening Ceremonies, you will have noticed THE QUEEN AND JAMES BOND that Underworld did a pretty great job scoring the music. Arguably the stand out piece was Caliban’s Dream, which featured Alex Trimble from Two Door Cinema Club, as well as Only Men Aloud, Dockhead Choir, Elizabeth Roberts, and Esme Smith. Surprisingly, a version has made it onto YouTube and has NOT been taken down by the famously aggressive International Olympic Committee. Perhaps because it’s legally purchased, audio-only uploading of the song? It doesn’t matter – what matters is that you can listen to it below. Feel inspired to get off the couch after listening to the 7-minutes of this simple yet beautiful tune by Underworld. The song is part of Isle of Wonder, which we noted earlier today went to number 1 in the charts. […]
