Scientists To Re-Create 170 Year Old Beer, World Wonders Why

It is (unfortunately) well documented that we here at PeteHatesMusic love our beer. But this particular story we might shy away from – scientists are attempting to re-create a beer from 170 years ago (via Technabob). There was a shipwreck discovered in 2010 off of Aland, Finland. The ship is thought to have sunk in the 1840s, when the captain was looking at his iPhone and not steering. The shipwreck contained a bottle of champagne, thought to be the oldest drinkable bottle of champagne, and has since been auctioned off. No eyebrows were raised when the auction winner died after his first sip.

The shipwreck also contained A ZOMBIE ARMY! two bottles of beer, which did not stand the test of time. I don’t like beer that is a few months old, yet alone 170 years old. However, the beer did retain its pale golden colour. What’s the logical thing to do? Why – re-create the beer, of course!

“Based on the chemical analysis we made of the beer and with help from a master brewer it would be possible to try to make beer that would resemble it as much as possible,” Annika Wilhelmson from VTT technical research centre of Finland told Reuters. Pretty sure I won’t be buying those beers at an auction.
