Morning Music Notes – Pirates vs Hackers!

The Pirate Bay vs. Annonymous: Ultimate internet showdown!
The Pirate Bay officially condemned Annonymous’ attack of the Virgin Media site, an act of protest by Annonymous as The Pirate Bay was taken down by Virgin’s ISP service in the UK. The Pirate Bay made the following statement on their Facebook page: We do NOT encourage these actions. We believe in the open and free internets, where anyone can express their views. Even if we strongly disagree with them and even if they hate us.

A strong move for The Pirate Bay. An extrame example, but isn’t Annoymous removing Virgin from the internet for censoring The Pirate Bay analogous to going on a killing spree to protest the death penalty?

Iggy Pop gets the boot from another label: Not necessarily a bad omen for this guy?
Picture this: you are a record label executive. You have given punk legend Iggy Pop some money to produce an album. He walks into your office:

Iggy Pop

Why don't these suits get me?!

…and says – I have completed my new album! You say something like, “what brand of gritty punk have you developed this time?” and he says, “it’s an album of me covering French standards”. Understandably, the suits rejected this album, and Iggy Pop has been forced to release it on his own.

The album consists of covers and re-takes of French standards from the likes of Serge Gainsbourg, George Brassens and Édith Piaf. An interesting concept, and not the first time Iggy Pop has done something that his label hasn’t liked… an so far it has worked pretty well for him.

Video Challenge: make a Jimi Hendrix Biopic without using any of his music!
Jimi Hendrix’s estate is battling with Hendrix biopic film-makers over their level of participation. Amazingly, this is not the first Hendrix movie that has been cut off at the “can we use any music?” stage. One would think that might be among the first questions to ask…

New Modeselektor/Thom Yorke collaboration video:
Here’s a new vid from dub-master Modeselektor and dub-master Thom Yorke (I call everyone ‘the dub-master’). As expected, it’s deep, heavy, and gorgeous.

[…] After the news of Robin Gibbs and Peter Jones passing away, you’re in need of some good news. In my world, good news revolves around Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. It also revolves around free candy, so if Thom Yorke ever hands out free candy, consider it the best news day in the history of the universe. Earlier this month, the excellent song This by Modeselektor and Mr. Thom Yorke hit the airwaves. […]
