Use Mogees to Make Sounds From Literally ANY Surface

Do you ever walk around, hitting and drumming on various surfaces, to the music in your headphones (or the voices in your head)? What if I told you I could fly! that there is a way to take this drumming on objects – such as chairs, a bed, a car, or even a cat (if you can catch it) – and make it play sounds based on the objects you’re hitting? Well, there is a way (or else this would be a pointless blog post) and it’s called Mogees (via Wired).

Mogees is a project by Bruno Zamborlin, a PhD student at Goldsmiths. Mogees uses a microphone to change different surfaces and gestures into different sounds. You put the mic on the surface you want, and then touch, tap, slap – whatever – to the surface, and you’ve made music. You can associate different gestures with different sounds, and Mogees will play the sound. Since the sound is based on the sound picked up from the mic, you can hit different parts of the object to hear different pitches of the same sound.
