Morning Music Notes – What is in A Name and a Baby Bump?

Neil Young Charity Line Up Unveiled

Every year, Neil Young puts on a gala charity gig, the Bridge School Benefit, featuring some of the best acts in music that he and his wife pick out. If I know relationships, it is his wife doing the picking. This year’s schools will be held on October 22-23 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. This year’s line up will include Foo Fighters, Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, Eddie Vedder, Beck, Tony Bennett, and others. The ‘catch’ is that all bands will be performing acoustically. So that means Eddie Vedder on his ukelele, and Foo Fighters playing their crappy In Your Honor acoustic disc. There is a great bootleg from years past of Thom Yorke floating around, in which he plays Paranoid Android by himself – impressive stuff.

Profits from the weekend’s shows will go towards the Bridge School, which helps children with “severe physical impairments and complex communication needs” (via NME).

I’m Glad This Was Not a Wardrobe Malfunction!

You know it’s a slow news day when….Rumours are circulating that Beyonce was wearing a fake baby bump at the MTV Music Awards, when she dramatically announced to the world that she is preggo. Info for your office water cooler:

“Mediatakeout.com have now accused the singer of wearing a ‘fake bump’ at the awards, quoting a ‘top media insider’ as their source. The website reports: ”Our insider claims that Beyonce IS IN FACT pregnant. But that she is NOT in her second trimester – she’s only a little more than 8 WEEKS pregnant. Tells the insider, “She wanted the announcement to be dramatic, so she made sure she had a baby bump.”

“As previously reported on Gigwise, Beyonce’s announcement that she was pregnant set a new Twitter record. She then showed her bump off again during her performance at the bash. The announcement prompted a flood of tweeting, with a record 8,868 tweets per second – the most ever for a single event. (via Gigwise).

Mos Def to Follow in Puff Daddy’s Footsteps

You know it’s a slow news day – Part 2 – when….Mos Def has announced that he will be dropping the name “Mos Def” by the end of this year, and will henceforth be known on record as Yasiin (via Rolling Stone).

Not quite sure why rappers need to constantly be “evolving” their names, but more power to ya, Mos.

“I’m retiring the Mos Def name after 2011. I’m actually doing it. Yasiin. That’s it,” he told MTV2’s Sucker Free. “Mos Def is a name that I built and cultivated over the years, it’s a name that the streets taught me, a figure of speech that was given to me by the culture and by my environment, and I feel I’ve done quite a bit with that name and it’s time to expand and move on. Also, I didn’t want to have to deal with having any moniker or separation between the self that I see and know myself as.”

Er, makes sense. Except that his real name is Dante Terrell Smith, so his little speech is a little off.
