Apple Moves With The Times

Apple is a computer company…right? Well, that’s how they started and operated for many years. Then came this little thing called the iPod. No more clunky walkmans or discmans. 10,000 songs in your pocket. A lifechanger for many people, myself included. Many people began to think of them as the iPod company, with computers as an afterthought. Then came the next game changer – the iPhone. It had the functionality of an iPod, but let you ‘phone’ people (people still do that??). It also had revolutionary apps, which created a whole other market for Apple. The latest revolution has been the iPad. It’s a hybrid of their iPhone and their Macbook laptops, bringing the best (and worst) of both worlds. I still kick myself for not buying Apple stocks before all of these paradigm shifts and doubling of stock prices.

The question today is, what is Apple? How do they make their money? Thanks to the Business Insider’s fancy chart, PeteHatesMusic can show you.

Interestingly, and perhaps not surprisingly, iPhone is the biggest revenue generator for Apple. This chart also gives credence to people talking about Apple killing off the iPod, as it doesn’t bring home the bacon. Why feed an extra mouth, when you can combine that mouth into other great products. Does that analogy even make sense?
